Company Reiterates Full Year 2022 Guidance

PLANO, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rent-A-Center, Inc. (the “Company” or “Rent-A-Center”) (NASDAQ:RCII) today announced results for the quarter ended March 31, 2022.

“With the Rent-A-Center Business segment showing good momentum, highlighted by 22% 2-year same store sales growth, and progress at Acima, with the previously announced leadership transition and recent underwriting adjustments showing improvements in risk and yield indicators, we are encouraged by our start to 2022,” said Mitch Fadel, Chief Executive Officer. “Furthermore, with revenues and earnings above the mid-point of our first quarter guidance ranges, we believe the Company is on track to achieve our targets for the year,” continued Mr. Fadel.

First Quarter Consolidated Results

  • First quarter 2022 consolidated revenues of $1.2 billion increased 11.9% year-over-year, primarily due to the acquisition of Acima Holdings, LLC (the “Acima Acquisition”), which closed on February 17, 2021. On a pro-forma1 basis, revenues decreased 5.8% due to declines in merchandise sales revenue and rental and fees revenues. Merchandise sales revenue decreased year-over-year primarily due to a lower proportion of customers using early payout options, likely due to the effects of government stimulus programs winding down. Rental and fees revenues decreased primarily due to higher provisions on delinquencies for the Acima segment related to lease vintages underwritten in late 2021 using assumptions that lagged worsening customer payment behavior following the end of government stimulus programs.
  • GAAP operating profit for the first quarter of 2022 was $11.0 million compared to $70.0 million in the prior year period. GAAP net loss for the first quarter of 2022 was $4.2 million and included $48.7 million of costs, net of tax, relating to special items described below, compared to $42.6 million of GAAP net income and $45.2 million of costs, net of tax, relating to special items in the prior year period.
  • Adjusted EBITDA in the first quarter of 2022 was $99.5 million and decreased 42.9% year-over-year on a pro-forma1 basis, primarily due to lower pro-forma revenues, higher loss rates on lease vintages underwritten in late 2021, and higher operating costs. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 8.6% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 14.2% in the prior year period on a pro-forma1 basis, and margin contraction resulted from the same factors that negatively impacted Adjusted EBITDA.
  • GAAP loss per share for the first quarter of 2022 was $0.08 compared to diluted earnings per share of $0.64 in the prior year period. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share, which excludes the impact of special items described below, for the first quarter of 2022 was $0.74 compared to $1.32 in the prior year period.
  • For the three months ended March 31, 2022, the Company generated $205.3 million of cash from operations, returned $21.1 million of cash to shareholders through dividends, and paid down $170 million on its revolving credit facility. The Company ended the quarter with $95.7 million of cash and cash equivalents, $1.4 billion of debt outstanding, $439 million of liquidity that included $344 million of undrawn revolving credit availability, and pro-forma1 net debt to Adjusted EBITDA ratio of 2.3 times.

First Quarter Segment Highlights

Acima Segment: First quarter 2022 revenues of $599.4 million increased 31.0% year-over-year due to the Acima Acquisition, completed on February 17, 2021. On a pro-forma1 basis, revenues decreased 8.1%, with decreases in rental and fees revenues as well as merchandise sales revenue. The decrease in rental and fees revenues is primarily attributable to an increase in provisions on delinquencies for the current quarter that reduced rental revenue. The decrease in merchandise sales revenue is attributable to a lower proportion of consumers electing early payout options in the current year compared to the prior year, likely due to the effects of government stimulus programs winding down. GMV decreased 21.2% year-over-year primarily from lower lease conversion rates, likely due to the effects of tighter lease underwriting initiated in recent months as well as the impact of government stimulus programs winding down and other macro-economic factors. On a two year basis, GMV increased 10%. Skip/stolen losses were 12.6% of revenue in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 8.6% in the prior year period on a pro-forma1 basis. On a GAAP basis, segment operating profit was $9.6 million with an operating profit margin of 1.6% in the first quarter of 2022, compared to $24.8 million and 5.4% in the prior year period. Adjusted EBITDA was $29.0 million with an Adjusted EBITDA margin of 4.8% in the first quarter of 2022, compared to $76.2 million and 11.7% in the prior year period on a pro-forma1 basis. The year-over-year decrease in Adjusted EBITDA was primarily attributable to higher delinquencies and loss rates which stemmed from a lag in recalibrating underwriting as customer payment behavior worsened in later 2021.

Rent-A-Center Business Segment: First quarter 2022 revenues of $518.5 million decreased 1.2% year-over-year on a 1.1% decrease in same store sales primarily attributable to fewer merchandise sales and early payout options in the quarter, compared to the prior year period that benefited from government stimulus programs. E-commerce accounted for 23.4% of revenue in the quarter, compared to 22.3% in the prior year period. The segment lease portfolio value increased 5.6% compared to the prior year period, and same store sales were up 22.3% on a two-year basis. Skip/stolen losses were 3.9% of revenue in the first quarter of 2022 compared to 2.7% in the prior year period. On a GAAP basis, segment operating profit in the quarter was $100.2 million with operating profit margin of 19.3%, compared to $121.3 million and 23.1% in the prior year period. Adjusted EBITDA in the quarter was $107.4 million with Adjusted EBITDA margin of 20.7%, compared to $126.2 million and 24.0% in the prior year period. The decline in segment operating profit and Adjusted EBITDA was primarily attributable to normalized loss rates compared to the prior year period that benefited from government stimulus, wage increases for certain in-store positions, and higher other operating expenses. On March 31, 2022, the Rent-A-Center Business segment had 1,852 company-operated locations.

Franchising Segment: First quarter 2022 revenues of $26.1 million decreased 34.6% year-over-year due to lower inventory purchases per store. Segment operating profit, on a GAAP basis, and Adjusted EBITDA were $4.8 million in the first quarter and decreased $0.2 million year-over-year. On March 31, 2022, there were 464 franchise-operated locations.

Mexico Segment: First quarter 2022 revenues of $15.7 million increased 8.4% year-over-year on a constant currency basis. Segment operating profit, on a GAAP basis, and Adjusted EBITDA were $2.1 million and $2.2 million, respectively. In the first quarter, GAAP operating profit increased $0.1 million year-over-year. On March 31, 2022, the Mexico business had 122 company-operated locations.

Corporate Segment: First quarter 2022 non-GAAP basis expenses increased $10.3 million year-over-year or 21.7%, reflecting the addition of Acima related costs and continued investments in our growth initiatives.

Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV): The Company defines Gross Merchandise Volume as the retail value in U.S. dollars of merchandise acquired by the Company that is leased to customers through a transaction that occurs within a defined period, net of cancellations.
